-ED Pronunciation

-ED pronunciation raises a lot of problems for ESL students.  So watch this video to clear up the doubts...

There is a number of adjectives ending in -ed which are pronounced in  final /Id/, although there is no /t/ or /d/ sound before.




1- aged       


      a.  /d/  - He was aged 20 when he got married.
                   A middle aged woman.
      b. /Id/ - Aged people are wiser. = ELDERLY


2- beloved
     
      She never admitted her beloved son cold have done something wrong.
                
           After "be" it can also be pronounced /d/


3- blessed    
 a- /t/ 


 b- /Id/ 


    a- After a verb (meaning "gifted")
         She was blessed with beauty.
     b-before a noun.
         He was granted blessed wisdom.




 
4- crooked           
 /Id/  


       He walked along crooked streets till he found the place.

 
5- cursed    
 a.  /t/


b.  /Id/


a. He was cursed for ever.
b. He was cursed a crooked wife(=very unlucky in having).




 
6- jagged    
 /Id/      


         A jagged edge of a rock injured him.

 
7- learned   
 /Id/      


He was one of the few learned men of the time.

 
8- naked     
 /Id/      


The naked body was lying on the floor.

 
9- ragged    
 /Id/       


She was wearing a ragged dress.


 
10- rugged   
 /Id/       


He always had a rugged nature.


11- sacred   
 /Id/   


This is a sacred place. You'd better be silent.

 
12- wicked   
 /Id/        


She's a wicked woman. She murdered her husband.

 
13- wretched 
 /Id/  


She was so wicked because she had a wretched childhood.
